Dubai – Burj Khalifa – On Top of the World

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world at 829.8m (2,722ft) and the iconic building is known all over the world.  It is made up of 163 floors with multiple hotels, residential and business units and below it is Dubai Mall (the largest mall in the world).

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa opened in January 2010 and I had planned to go when I visited in April of that year, but the observation deck ‘At the Top’ was still closed to the public.

When I came back to Dubai in 2012 going up was on my must do list. ‘At The Top’ is the observation deck on 124th floor or 452 m (1,483 ft) above the ground.

So what is it like?  The day we went was pretty clear with some cloud cover in the distance.  You could just see the Burj Al Arab.  It is said that during low tides and days of good weather you can see the shores of Iran from the top of the skyscraper, but we weren’t lucky enough.

The views are amazing though and at time surreal, it is as if you are looking down at a miniature size model of the city.  If you have vertigo you don’t have to go outside but I would if you want the best experience.  It’s one of those thing you have to do when in Dubai and price wise level 124 it’s quite reasonable compared to UK attractions.  There is even a Gold ATM up there, put money in small gold bars come out.

In 2014 Burj Khalifa opened ‘At the Top Sky’ on the 125th & 148th floor SKY level is at 555m (1,821 ft).    ‘At the Top Sky’ gives you a more exclusive encounter and additional experiences like ‘A Falcon’s Eye View’ but of course at a price.  I haven’t been to ‘At the Top Sky’ but I may go when in Dubai next spring.

Tips: Check the weather forecast so you can book for a clear day, if going in the late afternoon or evening visit the fountains afterwards they are also amazing. You can pre-book your tickets here.

Facts: When the Burj Khalifa opened in 2010 ‘At the Top’ on the 124th floor was the highest observation deck in the world.  However  this was surpassed in December 2011 by ‘Cloud Top 488′ on the Canton Tower at 488 m (1,601 ft).  So to beat this feat the ‘At the Top Sky’ opened on the 148th floor at 555m (1,821 ft).

Rating: 4.5/5.0
